lyrics

Carolina dances on the roof beneath the starlight
as she sways to the beat of the drum machine
Holds her hands out to the sky and let’s all worry pass her by
she sways to the beat of the drum machine

Have you ever been this close
to feeling no remorse
to being where you want to be

Carolina smiles and opens her eyes
as she sways to the beat of the drum machine
turns her shoulders bare and tosses her hair
and it sways to the beat of the drum machine

Have you ever been this close
to feeling no remorse
to being where you’ want to be

Carolina’s hips they do a certain little twist
where you can almost get your head around
let’s her twirling legs move along the edge
to where the music is not that loud

Have you ever been this close
to feeling no remorse
to being where you’ want to be

Carolina’s feet then move to your seat
where she sits down next to you
takes your hand, lifts it to her lips
and with the softest kiss she gets you there

After completing the mammoth task of writing one song a week for a year, Carolina’s Anatomy is the first single chosen from those 52 tracks. The song balances on contradictions, wavering between happiness and melancholy and blending traditional folk and country influences with lyrics conceived on a Berlin dance floor. It was produced by Dutch singer-songwriter Tim Knol, who also played banjo and pedal steel on it and will be released on the artist’s own Maiden Name Records.

The inspiration for this song came from a totally different place than it’s finger picking guitar base would have you imagine. VanWyck: "The lyrics came to me at the end of a night of relentless clubbing in Berlin, when I ended up in a place I really did not want to be. In the early hours of the morning the pounding techno had finally driven most people from the dance floor, but one of my friends kept dancing in this sweet elegant way that is completely hers and had nothing to do with the bleak, harsh surroundings. She looked like a heavenly vision swaying gently between the ruins of decay, swirling her limbs to these deafening beats, softening them in a way. I remember feeling this warm wave of happiness just looking at her dance, eclipsing the nausea of being tired and wanting to go home. So I guess it’s a song about the transcendency of friendship and dance, about unexpected moments of happiness and about how sometimes things blossom out of unexpected surroundings."
